In 1996 a fund-raising campaign was begun with the specific aim of supporting the Cathedral's music through endowment, the rebuilding of the organ and to enhance the cathedral's education project. As part of this project, the Cathedral started a scheme whereby young singers could join the choir for a year and gain valuable experience singing next to the Lay Vicars Choral. The scheme has proved a great success for all involved with it and past scholars have won awards to St John's College, Cambridge; Christ Church, Oxford; The Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music.
