Like the Lay Vicars Choral, the choristers have been part of the Cathedral Foundation since the Middle Ages. They are currently educated at the Cathedral School, which is in the former Bishop's Palace, a magnificent 17th century building at the heart of the Close. There is provision for 18 choristers and up to five probationers who spend their first year learning the trade.
