Choral Evensong was first broadcast on Radio 3 on Thursday 7 October 1926 live from Westminster Abbey and has been broadcast weekly on BBC Radio ever since. Broadcast choral Evensong is the longest running BBC programme from any outside venue. Following its first broadcast from Westminster Abbey, the programme was then broadcast weekly from the Abbey and, later, weekly from St Paul's Cathedral.
Since its first transmission choral Evensong has been broadcast from cathedrals, abbeys and college chapels all over the country and, in more recent years, from overseas locations such as St George's Cathedral (Cape Town), Washington National Cathedral, St Thomas's Fifth Avenue (New York), and from St Andrew's Cathedral (Sydney). At present Lichfield broadcasts roughly once per academic year although previously there have been several in the course of a single year. The list below gives the details of the choral Evensongs broadcast from Lichfield, but does not include other programmes such as Radio 4's Daily Service, or Sunday Worship.
